“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
Jones additionally clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
